Covid Protocol Announcement

February 19, 2022

Dear Berwyn North Families and Staff,

A few recent court decisions have impacted required COVID mitigations in schools.  These court rulings support the following:  1. Making masks optional in schools; 2. Optional testing for unvaccinated staff; 3. Non-exclusion of asymptomatic staff and students who are close contacts

Recently, the COVID-19 positivity rate in the state, county, and local community have significantly dropped and the Berwyn community as a whole has taken advantage of vaccinations and boosters. In addition, our district has COVID testing and screening available to all staff and students. Together, we have successfully implemented in-person learning for our students since the start of the school year and we ask for your continued understanding and support as we adjust our COVID-19 mitigations in response to current data and recent court rulings.

Effective Tuesday, February 22, 2022, masking will be strongly encouraged for all students, staff, and visitors in Berwyn North schools.  However, we will no longer require that masks be worn. We will continue to administer rapid tests to students who are close contacts but will not require quarantine for students who are asymptomatic. Below is a list of COVID mitigations that will continue in Berwyn North Schools:

  • Requiring 5-day quarantine of individuals who test positive for COVID

  • Isolation of symptomatic individuals while on school property

  • Social distancing

  • Providing masks upon request

  • Requiring masks be worn on school buses (this is a federal law)

  • Shield and Binax testing at all schools

  • Contact tracing

  • Informing close contacts of positive cases

  • Reinforcement of handwashing and healthy hand hygiene

  • Cleaning protocols

Please note that the decision to make masks optional is subject to change if/when there is an increase in the COVID positivity rate.  Our goal is to maintain a safe environment.  Therefore, we highly encourage everyone to continue to wear a mask.

If you have questions or concerns, please contact me at 708-484-6200.  I look forward to our continued work together.

Dr. Michelle Smith, Superintendent

Berwyn North School District 98
